Nabeshima wares were the only products of the Arita kilns made exclusively for use in Japan. They first emerged in the mid seventeenth century and were made primarily as presentation pieces. The Nabeshima kilns were noted for producing dishes and plates in three basic sizes and in matched sets of twenty or thirty.
